WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) today announced that two Ohio students were selected as delegates to the 50th annual United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP) held in the nation’s capital from March 3-10, 2012. John Corcoran of Rocky River and Matthew Ducey of Maumee were selected to participate in the highly competitive national program.

“Ohio schools continue to produce outstanding young leaders capable of bringing new ideas and energy to our democracy,” Brown said. “Only a small fraction of students are allowed the opportunity to participate in the U.S. Senate Youth Program, and I know that John and Matthew will represent Ohio well during their trip to Capitol Hill.”

The USSYP – a merit-based program that selects two outstanding high school students from each state—sponsored by the U.S. Senate and funded by The Hearst Foundation—is aimed at giving young people an opportunity to understand the interrelationship of the three branches of government.

John Corcoran is a student at Rocky River High School, where he serves as a representative to the Student Council, is a member of the National Honor Society and the French National Honor Society, and has participated in the Science Olympiad and Model U.N. In addition, he is a member of the environmental club, the Key club and a three-year member of the tennis team. He also volunteers at the Lake Shore Day Camp for disabled children.

Matthew Ducey attends Maumee High School where he serves as president of Student Council, and is fully enrolled in AP and Honors courses while maintaining a 4.3 GPA. He received the Lucas County Educational Service Award for outstanding academic performance in social studies, and is also a member of the speech and debate club and the diversity club. Matt has been on student council for three years and was also on the football team.
