Brown Encourages Ohioans to Vote for Van Buren’s Chicken Alfredo with a Twist, only Semifinalist from Ohio, One of 15 Entries Remaining
WASHINGTON D.C. – U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) today applauded Van Buren Middle School’s inclusion as a semifinalist in First Lady Michelle Obama’s Recipes for Healthy Kids Competition. Van Buren is the only Ohio semifinalist and one of 15 schools selected out of 340 entries nationwide.
“I congratulate Van Buren Middle School for their advancing to this recognition,” Brown said. “Schools like Van Buren need to be recognized for their innovation and commitment to nutritious lunches and I encourage all Ohioans to vote for Van Buren.”
Louise Easterly, supervisor of food and nutrition services for Kettering City Schools, developed the Chicken Alfredo with a Twist recipe along with a team of students from Van Buren to develop healthy, “kid-approved” recipes to be served in Kettering’s cafeterias.
Members of a judging panel from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) will visit Van Buren to taste the dish and determine whether the entry will be selected as one of three finalists. The top three teams will compete in a national cook-off to determine the grand prize winner. Finalists will be invited to prepare their nutrition-packed meals alongside White House chefs.
Semi-finalists' recipes will also be posted for online voting by the public to determine a Popular Choice Winner. Sen. Brown encourages Ohioans to vote online at http://www.recipesforkidschallenge.com/submissions.
