WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) today applauded the hard work of Eli Underwood, of Urbana, who earned his Eagle Scout rank. Brown sent an official letter of congratulations to the Champaign County resident.

“Eli, his teachers, and family should be proud of his noteworthy accomplishment. Earning the rank of Eagle Scout means he has displayed the ambition and resolve needed to earn the Boy Scouts of America’s highest rank. He exemplifies the skills needed to lead in the 21st century,” Sen. Brown said.  “From one Scout to another, I am proud of his leadership, and I am confident that Eli will enjoy great success in achieving his goals for the future.”

The Eagle Scout award is the highest ranked award a Scout can earn. Eagle Scouts must demonstrate outstanding performance of the goals of Scouting: citizenship, character, and personal fitness. A total of 56,176 Eagle Scout ranks were awarded in 2010, which is only about 5 percent of all Scouts.

Brown became an Eagle Scout in 1967. Sen. Brown received his Eagle Scout badge from U.S. Sen. John Glenn.
