WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) met with Jefferson Awards for Public Service recipients Jordan Keefe and Jay Mirrow of Toledo; Ashlee Balcerzak, Shannon Dolley, Allison Hinsey, Cheyanne Laux, Daniel Ostberg, and Lindsey Smith of Maumee High School; and Mackenzie Cupp and Nate Dusseau of Springfield High School.

Keefe received recognition for founding Save the Feet, a charity which collects shoes for children abroad who are in need. Mirrow received the award for his work matching tutors and mentors with elementary school students in Toledo and creating a database to track student behavior and performance, meetings with tutors or mentors, and the material reviewed. Both Maumee High School and Springfield High School received awards based on the various community service efforts of their Students in Action groups.

“The Jefferson Awards honor people who work hard to make our state and country a better place to call home,” Brown said. “I commend these community leaders for their efforts to better the future.”

The Jefferson Awards for Public Service were cofounded by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Senator Robert Taft, Jr., and Sam Beard to honor United States citizens for their community and public service.
