WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) met last week with students from the campus ministry at Mount Carmel College of Nursing during his weekly constituent coffee, including Brianna Conkle of Logan. The students traveled to Washington to carry out community service projects focused on public health through Downtowners Campus Ministry.

“I enjoyed meeting with students who share my commitment to improving public health,” said Brown. “Our nursing profession needs talented, passionate individuals like these students to be advocates for their patients and improve health outcomes.”

The Mount Carmel College of Nursing is a private, specialized, four-year institution with campuses in Columbus and Lancaster. Founded in 1903, it offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing.

Brown continues to support and advocate for nurses. In March, Brown introduced the National Nursing Shortage and Patient Advocacy Act, legislation that would establish minimum registered nurse-to-patient ratios in hospitals, protect the rights of nurses to advocate on behalf of their patients and invest in training and retaining nurses to address the nationwide nursing shortage. Brown also introduced the Making the Education of Nursing Dependable for Schools Act, which resolves a technical issue regarding the way the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) funds hospital-based nursing programs.
