WASHINGTON, D.C. –– Today, U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) applauded an announcement by the Obama Administration that it will not include chained CPI in its 2015 budget proposal. Following the announcement, Brown offered the following statement:

“This is excellent news for American workers who spend a lifetime paying into Social Security. Cutting the inflation index would have dramatically reduced the benefits of seniors and disabled Americans, including veterans. Too many seniors have budgets that are already stretched to the breaking point and they cannot afford to see their benefits cut.”

Brown continues to fight for our seniors and to strengthen the Social Security Trust Fund. In November 2013, Brown announced his support for the Strengthening Social Security Act, legislation which would increase benefits for seniors and extend the solvency of Social Security, which nearly two in three Americans rely on for at least half of their income in old age.
