WASHINGTON D.C. - U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) issued the following statement on the announced retirement plans of Supreme Court Associate Justice John Paul Stevens:
"Justice Stevens has devoted his life to serving our country. His unwavering commitment to equality under the law should serve as an example to all judges and lawyers. As President Obama prepares to nominate his replacement, I hope he will name a candidate with the same commitment to a pursuit of justice and devoid of ideology or hidden agenda.
"From his service in our military during World War II, to his 35 years on the bench of the U.S. Supreme Court, Justice Stevens has served our nation with honor and distinction. For more than three decades, Justice Stevens carried out the sacred oath he took to support and defend the Constitution of the United States. His Midwestern values of hard work and fair play grounded his jurisprudence with a sense of equality and fidelity to the law. As the Senate prepares for the confirmation process of President Obama's nominee, I hope we can honor Justice Stevens' legacy and ensure that the Supreme Court does not give preference to the special interests of the privileged few over the rights and liberties of all Americans."
