WASHINGTON D.C. – U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) today announced that the United States Department of Veterans Affairs’ (VA) Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program has awarded $3 million in new federal funds to Volunteers of America of Greater Ohio, a Columbus-based organization, to aid homeless veterans in Cuyahoga County. The funds will be used to provide services – including health care, transportation, and personal financial planning – to low-income veteran families that are homeless or at-risk of becoming homeless.

“The men and women of the Armed Forces have been made a promise that if they defend our country, a grateful nation will provide them with services and benefits they have earned,” Brown said. “It is critical that we do all we can to end veteran homelessness and serve those who have served our nation.”

As the Co-Chair of the Senate Air Force Caucus and the only Ohio Senator to serve a full term on the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee, Brown continues to work to address issues facing Ohio veterans. Brown served on the veterans’ conference committee to negotiate the Veterans Access, Choice and Accountability Act of 2014, legislation signed into law August 7, 2014 to ensure accountability at the VA while improving the delivery of health care provided to our nation’s veterans.

In July 2014, Brown introduced the Mental-health Exposure Military Official Record Act (MEMORy Act), legislation that would ensure that unit commanders document events that individual service members are exposed to which might later be connected to Post-Traumatic Stress, mild Traumatic Brain Injury, or other injuries.

In December 2013, Brown announced his support for the Homeless Veterans Prevention Act, legislation that would improve homelessness prevention programs and increase the availability of transitional housing for veterans.
