Senator Brown Urges ESAB Welding and Cutting Products to Remain in Ashtabula

In letter, Brown Asks Company to Renew its Commitment to Ohio Workers

WASHINGTON, D.C. –U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) today sent a letter to Dan Preest, Vice President of Human Resources at ESAB, urging him to seek alternatives to closing the company’s Ashtabula facility.  Last week, ESAB, which employs approximately 100 in Ohio, announced tentative plans to relocate the Ashtabula jobs to South Carolina.

In the letter, Brown wrote, “The United Autoworkers (UAW), the State of Ohio, and the Ashtabula community are committed to helping ESAB remain in Ohio.  I urge you to work closely with them in efforts to retain jobs and grow your business in Northeast Ohio.”

Brown emphasized the strength of the Ohio’s workforce in urging the company to remain in Ashtabula. “Ohio workers have proven time and time again their commitment to making high quality products quickly, efficiently, and affordably.  The Ohio workforce has helped so many businesses like ESAB Welding and Cutting Products steer through challenging economic times to achieve the highest levels of company success.  With this in mind, I ask that ESAB renew its commitment to the loyal workforce that has worked so diligently for the success of the company.”

Dear Mr. Preest:

It has come to my attention that ESAB Welding and Cutting Products, a valued Ohio employer, is considering closing its Ashtabula plant.  I strongly encourage you to seek alternatives to shutting down the Ashtabula facility.

The United Autoworkers (UAW), the State of Ohio, and the Ashtabula community are committed to helping ESAB remain in Ohio.  I urge you to work closely with them in efforts to retain jobs and grow your business in Northeast Ohio.

The Ohio workforce is second to none in quality and work ethic.  Ohio workers have proven time and time again their commitment to making high quality products quickly, efficiently, and affordably.  The Ohio workforce has helped so many businesses like ESAB Welding and Cutting Products steer through challenging economic times to achieve the highest levels of company success.  With this in mind, I ask that ESAB renew its commitment to the loyal workforce that has worked so diligently for the success of the company.

It is my hope that you continue to work with local and state officials and find alternatives to closing the Ashtabula plant.  Please don’t hesitate to call on me if I can be of assistance. I look forward to speaking with you soon.  I stand ready to help you retain and grow jobs in Ohio.

Thank you for your efforts.

Sincerely,

Sherrod Brown
