WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH), chair of the Senate Finance Subcommittee on Social Security, Pensions, and Family Policy, introduced a resolution affirming the Senate’s commitment to protect and expand Social Security, so that future generations can continue to rely on its bedrock promise. This comes after several Republican members in the House and Senate have made proposals to undermine the retirement security Americans have earned.

“Ohioans pay into Social Security with every paycheck, and they want to know they can count on it when they retire,” said Brown. “That shouldn’t be partisan – Social Security is one of the most popular and most unifying institutions in the country. Ohioans should not have to worry with every election that politicians are going to try to take away the retirement they earned.”

Brown was joined in introducing the resolution by U.S. Senators Ron Wyden (D-OR), Bob Casey (D-PA), Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Patty Murray (D-WA), Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Ben Cardin (D-MD), Bob Menendez (D-NJ), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Alex Padilla (D-CA), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Ed Markey (D-MA), Cory Booker (D-NJ), Mazie Hirono (D-HI), Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), Chris Murphy (D-CT), Jack Reed (D-RI), Brian Schatz (D-HI), Maggie Hassan (D-NH), Mark Kelly (D-AZ), Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Tina Smith (D-MN), Tim Kaine (D-VA), Martin Heinrich (D-NM), Ben Ray Lujan (D-NM),  Raphael Warnock (D-GA), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Patrick Leahy (D-VT), Jacky Rosen (D-NV), Gary Peters (D-MI), and Jeff Merkley (D-OR).

Earlier this week, Brown hosted a news conference call to discuss his efforts to protect, and strengthen, Social Security benefits for seniors. Brown and U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) also led their colleagues in sending a letter urging the Biden administration to nominate a permanent Social Security Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner to serve at the Social Security Administration.

Brown also joined U.S. Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) this week to speak on the Senate Floor about the importance of protecting Social Security. In July, Brown and Wyden also urged the Social Security Administration to incorporate children in ongoing outreach efforts, to help families eligible for Supplemental Security Income.
